Workshop Descriptions

The workshop descriptions below provide further information regarding Quilting by the River's lessons in the art of quilting and Carla's approach to teaching. In her workshops, Carla covers various techniques within traditional quilting, focusing on innovative piecing techniques to improve speed and accuracy while coving creative design principles that bring traditional quilting into our modern lives. All of the workshops are designed and delivered with both the novice and experienced quilter in mind. In addition to prepared classes, it is possible to customize certain workshop material if your group is interested in a specific technique or topic.

One Day Workshops

Level: Suitable for confident beginner to advanced quilters. Skills and Concepts: Deb Tucker (Studio 180) precision piecing principles, along with colour and design.

For most workshops a smaller size project ie/ tablerunner or wall hanging is available. Tools for the workshops can be purchased from your local quilt shop, Carla’s Etsy shop or purchased from Carla during the class.

Introduction to Rapid Fire Hunter’s Star

Description: The Hunter’s Star a highly sought-after, yet complicated and time-consuming block (y-seams – yuck!). Carla gives students access to this block with Deb Tucker’s Rapid Fire Hunter’s Star™ ruler which has opened up the complicated quilt block by allowing it to be quickly and accurately strip-pieced. Students will learn how fast and fun this technique is through a 1-day workshop using the Rapid Fire Hunter’s Star™ ruler to construct a small project (e.g. wall hanging or table runner). In addition, the Tucker Trimmer III™ ruler will be discussed and demoed. By the end of the class, students will be amazed at what these rulers can do and be motivated to explore new design possibilities.

introduction to the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star

Description: Insert seems be gone! Hello Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star! Students will learn how to use Debbie Tucker’s Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star™ ruler and Studio 180 design principles - the creative fires are sure to be burning with the strip-pieced method! Once students learn the basic Lemoyne Star method, the Tucker Trimmer III™ ruler will be discussed and demoed. Students will learn how to use the Lemoyne Star™ tool and go on a guided exploration of what they can do. You can’t help but leave this class motivated to explore new design possibilities!

The Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star tool is required.

river Rocks

Description: River Rocks (previously named Di-Rects-ional) is an original design by Carla and was featured in the September/October 2016 issue of the Quiltmaker Magazine. With the use of elongated triangles, created with the Split Rects™ tool, this quilt design gives the illusion of curves without curved piecing. No templates and no paper piecing. This block is fast, fun and easy.

The Split Rects™ tool is required for this workshop.

Quarry

Description: “Quarry” is an original design by Carla. This quilt features a new and very versatile Studio 180 technique called Shaded 9-patch. There are no triangles to cut and no fussing with points. Let yourself dream of the endless possibilities where you can use this technique all the while creating this stunning quilt. This block is fast, fun and easy, a design that will even please the men.

The Tucker Trimmer 1 is highly recommended.

Flying Geese Fun

Description: These blocks certainly look like they are spinning. They are made solely with flying geese units. A great introduction to the Wing Clipper™ tool and a must have for every quilter tool box. The new Studio 180 “Geese of a Feather” technique, will have quilters marvel at the ease and precision in making non-mirror image three colour units.

The Wing Clipper™ tool is required.

Marquise

Description: Just by deconstructing a block, adding a bit here and there, you can create the most intriguing quilt layouts. Marquise introduces the quilter to what can happen if we dare to deconstruct and be a little off centre. Simple traditional units come together to create Marquise. With a little help from Studio 180 tools and techniques, this quilt will be sure to add some eye candy to any room. The Square Squared tool and Shaded 4-patch technique are covered in this workshop. The Square Squared tool will be required.

colour my quilt

Description: Colour My Quilt was designed to showcase the beauty in simplicity; one of my bucket list quilts. As a two-colour quilt, it is very bold and wonderfully minimalistic. A quilt of interest, that comes together quickly and easily while mastering simple quilting techniques. A great introduction to the principals behind the Studio 180 design theory of “make it bigger and square it up”, allowing the quilt maker to overcome their fear of points. This is also a great quilt to use up similar- in-colour fat quarters, but don’t be afraid to go all out scrappy.

Pathway to Spring

Description: The design for Pathway to Spring was inspired by thoughts of spring flowers and trellises in the garden. The star flower can be all one value of colour, or made to look like pinwheels using two fabrics of different value. We learn to construct “non-mirror image” combination units which form the points of the star block. The alternate block is a spin on a snowball block with half-square triangles and a coloured centre. The half square triangles are made using the “eight at once” technique, giving the design a trellis appearance. We can use up leftover fabric with a pieced border that is designed to forgive even for the most novice quilter. All units are made using the Deb Tucker method of making our units larger and squaring them up. The Springtime quilt comes together easily with the Studio 180 Tucker Trimmer 1® tool.

Two-day workshops

These workshops are designed to ensure that the student has a confident knowledge of the construction and concepts covered in the workshop. These projects cover either more than one tool or technique.

Catch a Falling Star

Description: This beautiful star featured in this guilt, is created by combining both Blazing Lemoyne and Banded Lemoyne Star points. Using the Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star™ Tool by Studio 180 Design, construction is a breeze. The points are strip pieced, with no templates and no "y”seams. A great way to showcase what this tool can do.

The Rapid Fire Lemoyne Tool and Tucker Trimmer 111 are required.

Students may opt to do a runner or square topper as an alternative.

Castle Lilies

Description: Castle Lilies was inspired by a classical antique version of a Carolina Lily quilt. The Lily block was re-engineered using Studio 180 techniques. The traditional needle turn appliqué was simplified to represent current trends. This quilt is a statement of what can be created when something old meets something new.

Techniques taught in class: Rapid Fire Lemoyne construction, fusible and invisible machine applique. The Rapid Fire Lemoyne tool is required. Depending on the desired appliqué technique, Apliquick tools and interfacing are required for the invisible machine appliqué technique.

Students may opt for this small topper or wall-hanging as a project size.
