Studio 180 Design

April May and June!

Hello Friends! So, this morning I opened my calendar, and I have to admit, a small scream escaped my lips. Can you believe it's already mid-June? My brain seems to have stopped functioning properly around the end of April when my inner Grandma mode kicked in with the arrival of Lauren and her family from England. I've been completely consumed with family time, soaking up all the cuddles with the grands. It's been such a joy to finally have everyone eating, sleeping, and just being together. My heart is bursting with happiness, and for that, I am incredibly thankful!

Oh, let me catch you up on what's been happening since we last talked. But before we dive in, grab a cup of tea and get ready for some tales. So, my first adventure was a Trunk-show in Elliot Lake. It was my first in-person gig since the pandemic, and boy, oh boy, was I a bundle of nerves during the drive there. It had been years since I did anything in person, so I was a bit out of my groove. And to add to the excitement, I had planned to use an overhead camera and projector setup for demos and showcasing the Studio 180 tools. Well, let me tell you, it was like riding a bike—with a few minor technical blips, of course. The quilters and I ended up having a fabulous and informative afternoon. Thank you, ladies, for making it such a wonderful experience!

Then, in the first week of April, I found myself in my trusty car, driving all the way to Bainbridge, NY. There, I met up with my besties from all over the Eastern US for a week of sharing new techniques, things we had learned, and, of course, quilting our hearts out. This time, we decided all of us should make the same project—a duffel bag. Now, let me tell you, the muttering that filled the air as we attempted to "sew" zippers, handle and other things was nothing short of hilarious. It just goes to show our unwavering dedication to quilting. Trust me, it’s so much easier!

Towards the end of April, the hubby and I loaded up the car and set off for Point Pelee and the Kingsville area. There, I had the pleasure of sharing my passion with the quilters of the Erie Shores Quilters Guild. Can I just say that quilting has taken me to places I probably would never have visited if not for this wonderful craft? I want to express my gratitude to all of you for taking me on these adventures to your neck of the woods. The trunk show was a hit, and the next day, we had a workshop where we worked on the project "Colour My Quilt." The quilters and I had an absolute blast spending the day together. It's always a joy to see my vision come to life through someone else's fabric choices and colour-ways.

We arrived back home on a Thursday evening, and you won't believe it—I had to repack my clothes and quilts the very next morning. This time, I was off to Thessalon, heading west. I spent the weekend there with quilters from near and far, hosted by the lovely Patty at The Creative Basket. We delved into the world of flying geese the Studio 180 way, exploring two projects and learning three different flying geese techniques. I had a fantastic time and made some wonderful new friends. I even got to catch up with some old acquaintances whom I hadn't seen since the start of the pandemic. (Well, I guess that goes for just about everyone on my friend list, LOL.) By the way, if you happen to be in the area, make sure to stop in at The Creative Basket quilt shop. It is quite a gem with lots of fabric, with some yarn as well. Also, Patty’s classroom and building is something you have to see and be part of. Oh and just if your wondering, Yes I did buy fabric, and maybe more then a little. wink wink

May was family month! Then Woosh its June. Quilters are back at regular classes here in the studio. I have had a few pictures come in of finished projects.

First is Colour my Quilt by Sheila. Her rendition is in yellows and she has graciously donated it to the brain tumour society.

Colour my quilt by Sheila Domonsky

Colour my quilt by Mary.

This next picture is from Mary. Mary was in my workshop “Colour my Quilt” in Kingsville in April. It is beautiful and so well done. Shortly after sending me the photo I received another email that said “STOP, I’ve discovered an Oops!”

Well Mary, Oopses happen even to the best of us, myself included. May I say, I think your quilt is wonderful and should be shown even with the oops! Way to go! For all of us that have little mistakes that go unnoticed till its to late to fix, think of them as winkles! They are the life lines of our quilts. They reflect our passion and not always precision, our love and deserve to be loved and our dedication to the art of quilt making.

As hard as I try, my mind swirls with new ideas for the fall. I am trying to get caught up with some of my projects that got set aside from the last few months. Do you find it hard to work when the sun is shining and the weather is warm? For me, the dock calls my name in the late afternoon and I can’t resist. There’s a part of me that panics when I look at the calendar and think, 12 more weeks and summer is gone! Yikes I wrote that and now you know too!

During the summer I will be working on some new exciting projects that I can not share right now, but stay tuned as I muddle through my pile of “have to”, “should do” and “have to” list of things that get me out of bed in the morning.

If you would like to book some time with me learning a new technique, getting some help on an existing project or just need some inspiration, feel free to give me a shout and book some time.

The Loft is also an option. If you’re from out of town and would like retreat space, and possibly book a class during your stay as well.

Well I hear the dock calling, Thank you for dropping by. Until next time, stay safe, stay cool and visit a quilt shop.

It's the start of Quilting Season!

Hello Friends. Nothing says fall to me more than sunflowers, and as I was putting my sunflower cuttings into a vase, I realized that the endless hot days of summer are rapidly coming to a close. That and I turned the page on the calendar, which caused me a few moments of anxiety. This year, fall is greeting me with a strange quiver. I have spent the last two years without deadlines, bookings or a do it or leave it “To DO” list. So this September, I am fielding calls from quilters, anxious to get back to classes, guilds looking to book in person guest speakers along with a trip to the UK thrown in there, for the arrival of our new grand baby.

So lets start at the beginning and go through all my here and there and what’s going on!

September always has me thinking of new beginnings. I guess it resonates from the back to school time line, where I feel September is the start of a new quilting year. It’s at this time of year that I like to re-evaluate my classes that I teach out and about, along with new ones for the Quilt Shops and also In Studio. I have spent a few days redoing my website so I invite you to have a look around, check out the classes I have available for groups and guilds, and new ones in the In Studio section.

My patterns are now available on my website as PDF Downloads with paper patterns available through my Etsy site with a link on my website as well.

Another new task has been creating the pattern for the Cruise. I have the fabric coming in slowly and will be ready to get at my sample in November when we get back for the UK.

I guess I need a few days to start pattern writing. Looks like Hubby is going to have to fend for himself for a few days. Yikes!!

Oh the Cruise! It is time to seriously start planning to join me on a Caribbean vacation. Check it out, www.quiltandcruise.com. If you have questions about the quilt projects feel free to give me a shout.

I have a few new classes booked to teach at Cindy Bee’s Quilt Shoppe in Espanola this fall. One of which is last spring’s cruise quilt, Colour my Quilt. Due to Covid, the cruise was cancelled, so that means I have kits available for this class. The kits are pre-cut into their respective squares, rectangles and triangles and available in two colour-ways. No cutting no fuss just come and sew. It’s that easy! For more details call Cindy Bee’s Quilt Shoppe at (705) 869-2548

Also at Cindy Bee’s, a fused tree skirt and my latest obsession “Nantucket bags”. So far I have made 5 with 3 more to go. They will be excellent travel bags to put things like cosmetics, medicine, charger cords, etc…. they are fast, easy and even the zipper was fun. Great for gift giving with Christmas around the corner. Only 107 days until Christmas! AHHHHH!

I have received a few Pictures from quilters who have finished some of their projects. Diane completed her Colour My Quilt in reds. It turned out beautifully. I just love seeing all your finished projects.

Susan sent along a photo of her Pathway to Spring. Such a great choice of fabric colours. Thank you both for sharing. Both of these quilts are from my pattern line and can be purchased either as paper via my Etsy site or PDF downloadable from my website.

Susan’s Pathway To Spring

I just held my first In Studio Class since spring of 2020. We had a blast. I must admit I felt a bit rusty but once we got going - it was like riding a bike. The quilters were making the “Migrating Geese” Table runner. Lots of laughs and chatter, and that is what it is truly all about.

A few of us Studio 180 Certified Instructors are taking part in a Block Exploration Challenge. We post pictures of our exploration for this basic quilt block every Thursday in September. The intent of these challenges is to explore a quilt block. We just want to have fun playing with blocks, sharing what we came up with - through the Studio 180 lens (what S180 tools and/or techniques can be applied to this block to create it) and checking out each other's designs. You can take a look or follow along on Facebook or Instagram. Not on Instagram, that’s Ok, just go to my instagram page and have a look. Find me on Instagram at Quiltingbytheriver.

I will most likely not be posting a newsletter for a bit, until we get back from the UK in mid November. This quilter will be relishing in baby snuggles as we great our now grand daughter in October. I will be available via email during that time if you need to get in touch. I also would like to remind you to sign up for my newsletter so that you will receive it via email.

Thank you for dropping by, Until next time, have a look around my website, get in touch with a friend and start a new quilt project

Waiting for the Sun!

The river still has lots of ice. Come on sunshine!

Hello Friends. Since I have returned from our visit to England, I have been spending a lot of time in the studio, but not quilting! (insert sad face here) There has been too many hours catching up on things like computer work, long overdue long-arm business and general preparing for a new season of quilting. I haven’t done much piecing and that part of me is busting to get at my machine and create. I have a few new quilts sketched on paper and now its time to start getting them onto the design wall and play! The snow is falling here today so I still feel likes it safe not to rush as I think spring will be a few weeks away yet. I am, however, so ready for spring and the warm sun.

Here it is April! Usually, this is the season when I’m out and about teaching workshops. This, I must admit, is my happy time where I feel energized by other quilters. Missing all of that has had me thinking long and hard as to “what’s next,” I have decided to open up the studio (with restrictions) to small classes of 2 to 3 quilters. Now that I am in my new neighbourhood, and with restrictions easing, I am also hoping to get to know the nearby quilters. I am beginning to restock the studio with essentials like new backings for our quilts, thread and needles along with those things you didn’t know you need but now that you mention it! So with the snow disappearing and spring around the corner, I’m here whether it’s classes, general quilting supplies or just a healthy dose of creativity and inspiration.

Due to the uncertainty that still looms over travel, my Quilt and Cruise workshop has been cancelled. I am disappointed but I understand. Looking into the future, I have already started to have ideas whirl around for the next quilt to teach at sea. Wonder where we will be going next? But wait, what about the cruise kits and all that wonderful fabric. Now’s your chance quilters, book your small group for the day and learn the tips and tricks to making the cruise quilt “Colour my quilt” or small “Flying Geese Fun” project. Better still, book into “The Loft” with your quilty friends and spend a few days away from home quilting up some April Showers. Just a reminder that The Loft is not only for quilters. There are many creative friends out there that enjoy knitting, sketching, painting, writing…. you get the idea. I welcome all creative types to take a few days to recharge and take advantage of the beautiful surroundings the French River has to offer.

Since the last newsletter, I have been able to quilt “Pathway to spring”. I have been slowly stitching (that’s what Deanna calls it!) my binding on while watching the curling. Thank goodness for curling! Then I received this email from one of my bestest quilting friends Marjorie. I just love her colours. I think early on, that is why I fell in love with teaching quilting. I can not make all the different creative possibilities that I think of when I design a pattern, and by teaching, I get to witness all the different layout and colour options that you all create. It’s like magic! Thank you Marjorie for sending along the photo of Pathway to Spring. Love it! Love it! Love it!

Another example of a creative change to one of my patterns is from Val. Her artistic addition to Colour my Quilt by adding a fussy cut motif changed the whole feel of the quilt. I wish I would have thought about something like that. Its a good thing I had a big 6 1/2” square for you to play with in the pattern. LOL

Stay tuned to the website and my social media pages for upcoming classes and studio news. I invite you to sign up for my newsletter on the website so you don’t miss out on my what, where and when news.

Now I had better get out for my walk before the feeling leaves me. Hehe! Thanks for dropping by. Until next time, stay safe, don’t shovel any more snow and lets do a sunshine dance!
