The roaring 2020!

IMG_3206.jpeg

Hello Friends. Its that time again when I choose a new word for the year. 2020 is already roaring. Two grand babies on the way, our plan is to make the River House the main home, a month of company from across the ocean and build a Sauna. All that and it’s only the 24th.

So my word for 2020 is going to be Maintain. Maintain my stamina for one, my focus to get all the things done and have Quilting by the River maintain its growth. Now, when I googled the word “maintain” it gave me : to continue to have, to keep in an existing state, or not to allow to become less. Ya got that one. Then I looked up an image of the word. Google gave me: How to maintain weight loss, Tips for maintaining weight loss, behaviours for maintaining weight loss. Enough all ready. Do you have a word? If so please share, as it’s sort of fun to look back and see if it held and for how long.

January has quilters hibernating in their sewing rooms. It seems this year that those of us who have been quilting for some time now are in abundance, as there seems to be a lot of Stash Buster Quilts and groups out there. I know that with our pending move, my studio gives me anxiety. Just ask anyone who comes regularly and they will tell you that I keep rubbing my head and saying, “Not sure where this is going to go in the new place.” With that, I’m thinking of having a purging party in the spring, downsizing, getting rid of the things I have bought but know that I truly will never have time to get too. I will post on my social media in the spring the when and where, so stay tuned.

My big TV debut aired on January 19th, on Episode 1 of Back in time for winter. What a hoot! I did all this research and prep to talk about utilitarian quilting in the 40’s and all they wanted was how quilting gets the woman out of the kitchen! How things have changed. My Hubby would say,”How do I get the woman out of the quilting room and get her in the kitchen?” LOL. Well at least the trout got some air time. :)

I received a picture the other day, of “Castle Lilies” made by a special lady, Wanda Thompson. I had the opportunity to meet Wanda a few years ago, as a bunch of us stayed at her retreat house in the Catskill mountains. I had brought with me my Castle Lilies quilt for show and tell. She fell in love with it and made me promise to send her the pattern when it was done. Wanda does beautiful appliqué and it shows in her photo. Thank you Wanda for the picture and your Castle Lilies is beautiful.

Well it’s that time of year again when I send out the information for my spring workshop. I was unable to get a guest instructor this year, but as luck would have it, I am teaching the two quilts from last fall when the workshop had to be cancelled. Summer Blooms and River Rocks will be the projects for the Workshop. They both use my favourite “Split Rects ™ tool by Studio 180 design. There are always runner and smaller topper options for those who do not want to commit to a large project but want the learning curve. Take a look at the information by clicking here. I ask you all to share with your groups and Guilds as you can print out the poster from my website. You do not need to belong to a quilt group to attend and you can spend the night for an even bigger treat with a friend right in the hotel.

I have added a few new one day projects to the “In Studio Sessions” section of my website. You can get in touch with me to make arrangements to come to the studio. You can also take a class as part of your stay in “The Loft”.

My longarm is calling with a quilt ready to go so I’d better get at it. Thanks for dropping by. Until next time, stay safe, enjoy our Canadian winter and keep on quilting.

I've been here, there and everywhere!

Hello Friends. I’m thinking about all that has happened since I touched base with you with my last blog post. Although it has only been a few weeks, it’s been packed with workshops, trunk shows and best of all great quilters.

The first weekend in May, was spent with the quilters of the Sudbury and District Quilting and Stitchery Guild.  The group spent two days learning about turned edge applique and all the extra stuff that we need to know to make our projects easy and beautiful.  I was so delighted to be asked to present a Trunk Show to the guild members on the following Monday at their annual Year end Banquet.  It is customary that I ask the quilters to give a big Hello wave to all of my other quilters who follow my blog. So from these quilters to all of you, “Hello and Happy Quilting”.

On May 15th and 16th I was in North Bay.  First, I was invited to share my quilts and stories with the afternoon group. Over the years I have had the pleasure of getting to know many quilters here in the North, and when I go to places like North Bay, it’s nice to touch base with those who I have had the privilege of teaching and now calling my friend.  One such lady is Deanna, who so graciously invited me to stay at her house.  I’m sure the reason was mainly because we have so much to get caught up on that chatting on the phone does not do us justice.

Thanks friend I owe you one! The next day the ladies came together to learn the tips and tricks to making the River Rocks block.  I am hoping that soon I will have pictures of their finished projects to share.

This past Thursday it was back in the car.  This time I was heading north to the Cobalt area, where I joined a lively group of quilters on a 5-day retreat.  The event was hosted by Gem Sewing, and in attendance were 20 some quilters waiting to learn all things related to flying geese and the Wing Clipper tool by Studio 180 Design.  As you can see from the following pictures, these ladies were into some serious quilting.

A big Thank You to everyone who attended the workshops.  The organizers, local shops and most of all, the quilters.  Without you I would just be talking to the bears in the back bushes of Northern Ontario.

Right now, I am busy getting my sample done for the fall workshop.  I will post the info as soon as I am done the quilt top.  Which may be sooner than later as today my house is getting covered by those gross tent caterpillars.  No real gardening for this lady.  EWWWW!!!  So mark your calendar as the date is set for November 10th and 11th. I had booked it for earlier but there’s a child’s wedding in October.

I hear the mower going so I’d better check Hubby doesn’t mow the Lupins down. Thanks for dropping by. Until next time, stay safe, were bug repellant and eat some asparagus.

It's a perfect time for quilting!

Hello Friends.  Believe it or not this is my favourite time of the year. Its cold and snowy outside. With snow shoveling the exception, outside chores are at a minimum.  Inside the house, everything is low key, that quiet and uneventful time after Christmas.  All this adds up to the perfect setting for some real quilting time.  Snow days equal Sew days and here in Northern Ontario, January to March quilters buckle down and quilt up a storm.

How do I know this?  Well the quilters that frequent the studio are in prime quilting form with lots of new quilts started and some old ones being finished.

Tumbling Triangles

Tumbling Triangles

I myself have been working on some new samples for upcoming classes this spring.  First is Tumbling Triangles made with the V-Block tool by Studio 180.  I will be teaching "Tumbling Triangles at Cindy Bee's Quilt Shoppe in Espanola, Saturday March 18th 10am to 4pm.  This has also been added to my "In Studio Sessions" list so give me a shout and we can arrange a time to come to the studio to make this fast, fun and easy project.

It is easy and fun to put together, and whips up in no time.  On the design wall is another fast and fun quilt “Love Links”.  Believe it or not, it is all constructed from flying geese, and the pattern makes several sizes.

It is also that time of year when we northerners go seeking some warmth and sunshine.  If your anything like me, travel time is a great time for those little handwork projects that we somehow never have the time to do at home.  I like to do hand work on a plane or driving in a car.  I am so thankful that I do not get motion sickness.  I have a difficult time sitting idly for long periods of time.

One of my take along projects is my ongoing work in hexies.  My hexies are ¾” in size and are so adorable. It is definitely a work in progress, as I started these last February, but Hey, what’s a quilter without UFO’s?

These little guys at 3/4" are so cute!

These little guys at 3/4" are so cute!

I am looking forward to Kathy Wylie’s visit here in May to soak up her tips and tricks when making hexies.  (Kathy will be here in Northern Ontario for workshops.)  Click here to find out more.

In anticipation of a winter holiday I did the prep work on the centre for a wool felt wall hanging.  Now I am all set for hours in a car, on a plane ….  I was going to bring my hexies again but they have already been on several trips.  :) LOL

I find wool felt projects so relaxing to stitch out.   Once the pieces are in place, it is just a blanket stitch to hold the pieces down and its good to go!  So when your walking on the beach, have a look around, maybe you will spot me stitching in the shade.

Thanks for dropping by.  Until next time, stay safe, keep warm and go finish a UFO!
